David's Kindness Towards Saul

David's Kindness Towards Saul

David and the men who gathered around him were living in the forests of Judah when a message came to him that the Philistines were raiding the people of Keilah. So David inquired of God and he and his men went to save the city! But with Saul still after him, he was forced to go on the run again. One day as Saul was hunting David, he went into a cave to rest. He had no idea that David and his men were hiding in the back of that cave. God had placed an opportunity for revenge in front of David, but David chose to spare his life. Showing us that it is better in God’s eyes for us to choose mercy rather than vengeance.

1 Samuel 24:4
In our most recent episode, we followed David through his encounter with Ahimelech, into the Philistine country of Gath, and into the caves of Adullam. God saw David through each step of the way, providing for him and keeping him safe from the hand of Saul. David began to gather a following of other outcasts and those who were hurting and needed hope – a presage of what Christ would one day do, not just for Israel but all the earth. Saul, who was blinded to all reason by his hateful desire to kill David, continued to hunt him down and even slaughtered priests and their families who he believed had betrayed him when they helped David. Today we’ll continue to see Saul, seething with anger pursue David. But even when given the chance to harm Saul, David shows the pureness of his heart and the tenderness he has toward his enemy.
